Hi, i'm Vilian Stefanov!

Adventurer and passionate traveller. My passion for adventure has been the driving force behind my life.

About me

Hello, my name is Vilian and I am from Bulgaria. I grew up in one of the most beautiful areas of our country – the Rhodopes. In a small town nestled in the mountains, amidst high hills, endless meadows, and lush greenery. From a very young age, I’ve been taught to love nature. I remember walking with my grandfather through all the small corners of the mountain.

This love gave birth to my first blog – The Forgotten Bulgaria, in which I wanted to show people the unknown, yet mesmerizing places in our homeland, which I discovered during my short trips. At a later point, I decided it was time for me to test myself and take my first big independent trip. That’s how I came up with the idea to cross Bulgaria on foot and to canoe from the southernmost to the northernmost point of the country with the ambitious plan to complete the trip in less than 30 days. The journey ended successfully and precisely within the time frame.

This helped me believe in myself and gave me the opportunity to learn more not only about the path and its difficulties, but also about my inner strength. My mindset changed to such an extent that very soon afterwards I was already planning my second solo expedition. I wanted to get closer to the nature once again and feel what I felt during my last 30-day trip - inner peace and balance, a sense of self-sufficiency and satisfaction in the little things - emotions one could hardly experience in everyday city life.

The goal of my second trip was to cross Bulgaria from the westernmost to the easternmost point, entirely on foot and only along the railway line, documenting still existing and already abandoned train stations and the stories of their guardians. During those 30 days, I met many interesting people and learned about different life experiences that I would otherwise never have learned about. The hardships that accompanied this journey in the late autumn and the persistence I had to demonstrate to conclude it, were nothing compared to the difficult fates of the people I had the chance to talk to, especially those in the smallest, distant villages.

The idea that I was ready for something bigger started to grow in me. I knew the whole world is full of people, places and stories that no one would ever have the chance to tell. I realized that I could not go back to my old life anymore, to a regular 9 to 5 job away from nature.

And this is how I began to organize the first part of a worldwide round trip that I dreamed of. Like every new challenge, there was a fear of the unknown, but deep down inside of me I was convinced that this was my path and I would find my place in the world only by following it.

I started my journey by bike, and then I used trains and buses. A huge part of it I passed on foot, since I was very used to walking on long distances. I crossed 7 countries within about 4 months.

Currently I am organizing the second part of this ambitious plan. And I am convinced that all the difficulties that lie ahead will make me a stronger, more balanced person, that I will be more focused on what is coming and I will be able to cross the next countries with the clear awareness that there is something great that awaits me.

Every single journey actually starts before we go on the road - we spend a lots of time making plans and wondering which way to go. Many may wonder what they need for such an adventure. It turns out that it is not that simple - before you go on such a trip you have to check the route, save enough money and last but not least to have a free time. Above all, however you need a great motivation to move you forward and a strong desire to make your dream come true!
